In most investment firms, brokers are compensated based upon transaction --- if you buy, there's a commission; if you sell, there's a commission.  In fact, it is to a broker's advantage for you to make as many transactions as possible --- even if it's not in your best interest.  They have one primary goal in mind --- managing your money i a way that creates income for the firm and representative, then for the client.  In fact, the SEC requires brokerage firms to include the line, "Our interest many not be the same as yours"* in their communications material.
